It is generally said that water is life but this axiom is more than relevant in the case of Pakistan because: i) high dependence of its socio-economic life on water, ii) projections of less than standard per capita water availability as suggested by WHO, iii) trans-boundary nature of its water resources and conflicts in distribution with neighboring countries (India and may be Afghanistan in future) & different geographical regions (Provinces) within country, iv) aspects of climate change and anthropogenic impacts on water resources. A sustainable water resource development is only possible when all the dimensions of spatio-temporal variations in supply and demand are fully explored and matched in such a manner that it shall integrate conflicting demands from different stake holders by optimized water management, considers the aspect of inter generation equity and above all keep the balance between the demand of water for human and sustainability of its eco-system and environment.
Water Resources Engineering deals with the application civil engineering on problems dealing with the regulation, control and management of water bodies like lakes, rivers and ocean for human benefit. The basic purpose of this engineering will be prepare the engineers to ascertain the water demand of various conflicting sectors of the society and industry and to give them the knowledge of management and water resource development by offering courses in the domain of River and dam engineering, sediment transport, fluvial hydraulics, applied hydrology, water resource management etc.
